Pet Healthcare
Owning a pet brings many pleasures and rewards to an owner. However owning a pet is a privilege and it brings certain responsibilities to ensure your pet remains fit and healthy and does not cause problems for others.
We believe that it is important that your pet is brought into the surgery within the first few days of you owning it in order that we may check its general health and offer appropriate advice on health care.
This may include discussions on:
- feeding
- worm treatment and prevention
- flea prevention
- vaccinations
- neutering
- microchips
- insurance
- any other concerns that you may have
Although the majority of puppies or kittens brought in for health checks are perfectly healthy, occasionally problems are discovered which may have long term implications and it is important that clients become aware of these problems early in case they need to discuss them with the breeder.
As pets become older various health problems may occur e.g. arthritis/heart problems. Once again by regularly checking your pet at the time of its annual booster or more frequently if necessary it is often possible to detect the symptoms of age onset disease early. This early diagnosis can lead to better and more effective treatment which should help to prolong both the quality and quantity of your pets life. Sometimes a simple change in diet is all that is required to improve an age related problem. In some cases clinical examination alone is not sufficient to spot early onset disease. We may therefore recommend a blood test be performed in older animals to check on liver/kidney/pancreatic/thyroid function and we would certainly advise on blood tests pre-operatively for older animals.
